Quick Intro to Chemo

If you’re newly navigating chemotherapy — as a patient or a caregiver — this page can feel like a lot. You don’t need to do everything at once.

Start with these basics:

  • Hydration first. Supporting the body with fluids is one of the most impactful daily habits during chemo.

  • Protein matters. Even small amounts throughout the day help protect strength, energy, and recovery.

  • Eat consistently, not perfectly. Maintenance is the goal — not clean eating or food rules.

  • Rest is part of treatment. Fatigue is real, cumulative, and valid.

  • Adjust day by day. What works one week may not work the next — that’s normal.

You don’t need to master this overnight. Chemotherapy is a long game, and learning happens in real time. Use what’s helpful, skip what isn’t, and always defer to your oncology team when medical decisions are involved.

Most importantly, give yourself grace. Showing up — imperfectly, consistently, and with care — is enough.
